blah,blah, blah dwarf

I’m so tired. In fact, I am so tired that I cannot even see straight. I really don’t know why I am up right now. In fact, I should be at home putting away my dishes, putting on my PJ’s and watching some sort of movie that I can fall asleep during the middle of. However, I decided that I should write something. My family has got to have something to read ϑ

Ulpan;

Ugh. That’s all I have to say. The class keeps getting bigger, and there is less individual time. This sucks. That is really all I have to say.

Work

I love work. I really do. However, my project is coming to an end, so I’m on the hunt yet again…. Surprised? Sadly I’m not.

Friends;

I have great friends here. That’s about it. I just do. So if you are reading this (and even the ones that claim that they refuse to read blogs even though I KNOW you do. So thanks for dragging me out of the apt, letting me use your Internet, having shwarma parties, and just being apart of my Jerusalem family. (Ok, sappy, I know.)

My Apartment:

I’m living alone right now. It’s really quiet.

Oh, and I promised a Hello to Jon and Rina Parker – Hi guys!

OK, so this wasn’t an exciting blog. Sorry. Ill work harder on the next one.

Weekly Wrap

I feel like I have a lot to write, however, I want to keep it pretty simple and to the point (for a change.) This past week has been an interesting week. All sorts of new things and many “Nikki Stupid Moments.”

Work

I started working and it was about time. I am really enjoying my job. I’ve never really elaborated on what I do, so here is me attempting to explain it. I am working on converting and transferring data from an old database into a new detailed database. I know that’s a mouthful. We have a lot to do, and I am really enjoying the challenge. I have a contract to work 6 hours a day; however, already I have stayed past that time. There is a lot of me to do and catch up on (the project has been in motion for awhile – I am the “big picture girl.” Meaning, I'm making sure that we get things done and on a set course. I’m enjoying it. I really hope that this one month contract work turns into something more.

Stupid:

I lost my ID card and my bus pass. I’m an idiot, the end. I replaced the ID card, however, I will have to wait until next month to get anew bus pass. Grrrr…

Visitors:

Confirmed:
My father and my Boba are coming to visit me (well, and the rest of my family that is here…details…) mid-Pessach, so that will be really nice. This is the first time that one of my parents have come to see me since I’ve been here and the second time my boba has been out – she came here last year as well. I’m looking forward to it. Might be a bit of a “family shock,” however, it’s something to look forward to.

That’s about it for right now. Oh, and by the way. Shabbat was really nice. Good food, good times. I even won at a game of chess! Go me. That never happens. We also played monopoly (or monopol is its called in Hebrew) did well. Had a corporate takeover of sorts happen, and I was even on the winning side. MWAHAHAHA. Good weekend for board games.

Looking forward to a week of work and ulpan – giddy-up!

Shavoa tov,

Nikki
Dwarf of the day: Not really sure. Doc. (only cause I won at chess…)

And all this after a week of ulpan, missing national documents and work. (and in truth, I only learned to cook when I first came to Israel.)

the wheels on the bus go round and round.

I am really really tired. However, I wanted to write something here. I knew that if I didn’t, I wouldn’t again for a long time. So here we go. This blog entry is just one long brain fart of sorts. I’m just writing. So enjoy.

My New routine:

4ish am wake up randomly, turn on hot water boiler so I can have a hot shower. Go back to bed.
6:15 alarm goes off. Cats jump on my head. Time to get out of bed.
7:25 leave the apt, go to catch the bus.
8:00 ulpan starts
12:30 ulpan ends (during the time in Ulpan, I learn some Hebrew, fight with gogie, all is goog)
14:00 start work. Now, in the time that ulpan ends and work starts, I am on a bus somewhere in the city (or waiting for a bus)
20:00 work ends. Go home.
20:30 show up at Ian’s. Use Internet. Sit on couch, not move and pretend were in Canaba.
21:00 Home, Do ulpan work, cook dinner, and unwind time. :)
11:00 ish, too tired to keep my eyes open, fall asleep.

That’s my new schedule Sunday- Thursday.

Work.

I’m enjoying it. Granted I’ve been there only 2 days, I am enjoying. I’m working with great people and learning lots. However, it’s interesting that in order to change the time and date on my computer I had to call the tech guy. Insane. Are people really that challenged that the tech guy is the only one that can do it?? Anyways, I got lost in the building. I’m still not sure where everything is. I’ll figure it out.

Ulpan

It’s still kicking my butt, but I actually love it. I think it’s the people. Truth is, I am actually learning, so that’s a good thing.

Life Post Yeshiva

I’m too tired to even think about it.

Buses

So I’ve been meaning to write this for a while. I now spend a good part of my day on the bus. Now, being on a bus here is an experience. When I first came to Israel a few years ago within hours of landing I was on a bus, so I am used to being on them. I don’t freak out being on a bus, I actually enjoy being on the bus. You never know whom you are going to meet. Countless times I’ve been on the bus and had conversations with total strangers. If they are living in the country they want to know where I am from, why I am here, what I am doing, if I am happy, why would I lave Canada for a country that has economic issues and terror. Sometimes you even get a Shabbat dinner invite out of it. If they are a tourist, same questions, but you end up giving them directions to their next tourist stop (and tell them about a few others!) However on the bus there is always the bus driver that just wants his shift to end. He drives like a mad man, you get knocked over, you fall on people (or onto the floor.) He might open the door for you at your stop AND he may even slow down. However, there are always good experiences (no, sitting beside someone for 30 min that has gas is not a good experience…trust me….) I’m starting to have my regular drivers. One driver is really cool. He actually lets people (more so, those that need extra time to sit down) sit down before he drives a way and is patient. On my bus to ulpan there are my “repeat-faces”- people I ride the bus with every day that I don’t know, but know only because we ride the bus together every day. At one of stop, a few passengers get on that have both physical and mental disabilities. This driver is so patient. He actually told someone to get out of the front seat so these women wouldn’t have to move to the middle. But why am I writing this? So the other day (Sunday) they get on and he calls them over, he brought them cookies. Then he was just offering cookies to everyone. Pretty cool. Just a friendly driver. These little random acts of kindness (which I know doing the SA/TO thing in USY we/I was always preaching’) really do make a difference. It was nice. Anyways. In the chaos of this country where things tend to get a little insane, there are always people doing little nice things for one another. Maybe they will have the butterfly affect somewhere someday, it’s a hope…

Anyways, I’m breaking my schedual. I need to go home. Being a working girl is hard. No time to see friends, no time to do anything. I’ve had to cancel something’s over the past few days due to work, so it’s hard balancing (sorry Aron/Yoni/Whatever your name is)

Have a great night, enjoy the bus ride. I do.

I'm a workin' Geek I tell ya!

Shalom Shalom to those in blog land.

Geek

I admit, I’m a bit of a geek. I sit here typing this while battlestar galactica is playing in the background. I’m mildly obsessed, but I guess I owe my addiction to my friends. I gave in to peer pressure. Bad friends, Bad! (But thank you!!!!!!!!)

Work:

I GOT A JOB. Yes, that’s right. I have a job. I will be working in both the HR and Recruitment department of a large company here in Jerusalem. I will be working on computer programs and databases. Kinda wild. It’s a one-month contract, then after that, we see what’s up for me. So YAY. I have a job. I’m a worker. I’m starting to build a career. (Only took me a few years to get here…)

Shabbat

Shabbat was great. We had good meat and good times. Let me tell you, the bbqed salami that I told you about was amazing. So good. Also did my laundry – well a good chunk of it. Yay happy smelling clothes.

Hmm… what else?

Ulpan

Still kicking my butt. But what can I do. Guess I will buy a football uniform. This way it might not hurt as much.

All right. I think that’s it. I have a meeting with the government tomorrow to convince them that they have to give me more money. Wish me luck on that.

Have a great night!

Rachel: didn’t have dinner yet – sorry!

Ulpan, trees and talking monkeys

Welcome to yet another entry of my blog.

What a week. I can gladly say that thank goodness it is the weekend.

It’s been a long week. Very long week. In fact, its times like this that I am glad that there is a Shabbat to look forward too.

Ulpan

Ulpan is kicking my butt. I’m not kidding. It’s hard. It’s funny; yesterday we were talking in class about intelligence and how some people have intelligence in languages. Let me tell you, that’s not me. My Uncle Steven got enough of that for the whole family (want to share a few with me? Heck, I’ll just take one!) Truth is, ulpan is stressing me out. It does and it will continue to do so. I just bought a book of 501 Hebrew verbs I’m hoping that it will help me a bit. All the “pi-els and poo-els” uurggggh. I really don’t like my not nice teacher. I call her the snake. Don’t trust her, don’t trust her one bit. Still having a good time in the class though… the English speakers are banding together. The frenchies have their own little pack. Could end up being a little west side story… (Gogie, you get a solo…heh…)

Work.

I’m not really sure what I am doing. I should know by Monday. Grrr.

Shabbat:

It all started last night when we came out to Modiin. I had been saving a Pearl’s Salami (yes, from Toronto) for this kind of occasion. We bbqed it. Let me tell you, it was amazing. Mmmmmm. I cut it into thin slices and when it was grilling, it popped up nice. Mmm… Good times. It might just be Ian, Moshe and I for Shabbat. We made a roast. We seasoned it last night. My first roast. It smells and looks great. I cannot wait. Looking forward to a restful Shabbat and some good reading.

Other brain matter:

Was a good week. A monkey in my mailbox, a tree planted and I actually made a living room in my apartment. It’s nice not having to watch TV or movies in my room. When are you coming over to check it out? I also bought a mini-tree. It presently “lives” in my kitchen. Not sure why, but I named him Marshal. Ok, I’m strange. But if this doesn’t surprise you, clearly you have known me for a while.

All right back to watching battlestar galactica. The new series mind you. It’s “frackin’ amazing. (If you watch the show. You just got the lil’ joke.)

Shabbat shalom,
Nikster

Trees, Yeshiva and the white stuff

Hello there.

Trees, glorious trees!

Yesterday was Tu Bshvat (kind of like Earth Day) so I went and planted a tree. So Zionistic, so environmental soooo much fun! I took pictures. Still trying to figure out how to put pictures up… I’ll figure it out – eventually.

Yeshiva

I cleaned out my “makom kavua” (the place where I always learned) kind of strange. I think I may have left a book there… Though I will be back. This Sunday we are having our siyum celebration (completion) for our chapter of Gemara. Should be nice. Anyways, I will still pop in and do things when I can. It was a good ride.

Work.

I’m not sure which department I am working in or when I start…details. the Details.

Snow snow snow.

Ok, so it hasn’t snowed yet. But it’s rumored that it will tomorrow night. I’ll keep you posted.

That’s about it.

Enjoy the flight.

Ps. Rachel- tonight was a chicken salad and it was good. : )

The Big Hole.

The Big Hole.

No, I am not talking about my room; I am talking about the Rimon Crater. I had the opportunity to travel with the CY for a really nice shabbaton down south. I’ll be honest, at first I was a bit hesitant to go – part of me has finished that chapter of my life and it was time to just leave already. But I went, and I am glad that I did.

The morning started off real early when I went to marzipan to get rugalach. If you don’t know what marzipan rugalach are, you clearly have not spent anytime with Anglos here in Jerusalem. They are a bakery that make great well, baked goods. Their rugalach are the most chocolate filled pastries you can find. A real favorite amongst the yeshiva. So I go and pick them up when we are going on some sort of tiyul. When I got there, they weren’t ready yet so Itzick – the owner told me to come back shortly. Yeah, I’m on a first name basis with him. That’s what happens when you live 3 min from their store. Anyways, I come back, make my 4-kilo order (not kidding) and make my way to the shabbaton. On our way down we made a stop at Ain Avdat, a beautiful hike with a little waterfall. I have done the hike a few times before so I planned to stay back and do my ulpan work – didn’t happen. I fortunately got to drive someone’s car up to the top (one of the faculty members) it was one of the nice 7 km drives ever – however, when driving in beauty you need to focus on the road, not the scenery around – so I did, and it was great. Anyways, we had the usual shabbaton things. We had a tish Friday night, which included lots and lots of drinking… now when I say lots, I mean lots and trust me I did a good portion of the alcohol consumption. No, I did not get sick nor make a complete fool out of myself- I did, however, speak in Hebrew which caused the Rosh yeshivas wife Yale to say to me (* Yale only really speaks Hebrew) “Nikki, I didn’t know you could speak Hebrew like that!” She said this in Hebrew to me. Her husband, my Rosh yeshiva Reb Shmuel then said, “Just give Nikki a drink and she can do it!” This then caused the whole yeshiva to laugh at me. Hey, when you’ve been at the yeshiva for as long as I have, it’s almost expected. Once the tish ended (lets say 1230 am, and after more whiskey, wine, whiskey and some more whiskey) my friend Dave and I decided to go check out the crater – don’t worry, there was a barrier, and I was not that drunk. We then hung out until at least 3 am, just laughing. Good times. It was really beautiful at night and the moon was amazing (you could hear nothing, nothing! It was amazing!) You could also see the stars. It was cool. Also don’t worry, I really don’t drink that much or ever truthfully. That night I froze. It was so cold I cannot even tell you how cold it was.

Anyways, I woke up Shabbat morning with a clean bill of health (not kidding) and enjoyed the rest of the shabbaton. Gave a good d’var torah if I do say so myself.

That afternoon my friend Josh and I decided to go for a hike. We climbed up this look-out called camel lookout. It’s a rock that looks like a camel. I hike up it in a skirt. It was a pretty steep climp. We get to the top only to realize that on the otherside there were stairs. HA! Well, that made going down a lot easier. We had a great view of the crater. If it wasn’t Shabbat it would have been prime photo op – next time.

BTW, Rachel. We had chicken for dinner.

Other than that, that’s it!

Have a great day. (Ulpan is fine. Its killing me)

AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

This blog entry has been written in my head over the past few days. I finally have time to sit and write it (why I have time will be later….)

Ulpan:

So fine, I started it. I’m there. Our ulpan class had two teachers who are like night and day. One is abrasive and the other is the complete opposite. I’m still in kita gimmel (the third class) so that makes me happy. However, I have lots and lots of work to do in order to stay in that level – which is fine. Id rather be challenged then bored. I’ve learned that I cannot space off into my own world as that is the precise moment that the teacher will call on me to say something or answer a question. There are some really nice people in the class. We’ve got our own little back row thing going (surprised I’m sitting in the back row? I’m not.) However, I just want to say now, that Gogie stole my answer in class (which I do have to say was a great answer,) then told the teacher that I hate him. So Mister Gogie (as I know that you are reading this) you are mean. The end. (The teacher did say “after 2 days you already hate him?!?” then we explained to her that we’ve known each other for a while and then she accepted the hate. I guess I have to be nice as he is in class right now taking notes for me as I’m not there (more on that later) Truth is, I’m having a good time at ulpan, however, I’m exhausted. 5.5 hours of Hebrew a day is pretty intense. My brain needs a refill after class. I don’t know how I am going to do ulpan and work at the same time-but I’ll figure it out… OH work? This is going to be fun…

Work:

So I was supposed to start work this Sunday. I’ve prepared myself that my social life is over at nights and that I am going to be exhausted- fine, I’ve accepted all of that. However, I get this e-mail last night (that is telling me what to bring with me to work the first day etc.) and it tells me that there is JUST an orientation and work doesn’t start UNTIL the end of the month. YES THE END OF THE MONTH. What does this mean for me? A month of NOT MAKING ANY MONEY. Which means, HOW DO I PAY RENT? UTILITIES? FOOD? AHHHHHHH. I’m sure it will work out, it always does, but why do these things happen to me? Really, do I have a sign on my forehead saying “Please screw around with my life, please?” So if you are feeling charitable, please let me know (or know someone that wants to support someone living in Israel…. I’m your girl!) Whatever, this is the story of my life. I’m coming to accept this. At least I have a job-right? So I put out an ad on one of the list serves that Jerusalemites frequent saying I have lots of time over the next few weeks – so I am looking for babysitting, office work or whatever, hopefully something will come up. I’m hopeful but doomed. Make this stop! (I am smiling and rolling my eyes at all of this….so I am not freaking out too much… just mildly…. : ) )

Apartment:

The person that was going to live with me decided to go back to the states. So I am now at ground zero again. Wish me luck. Have we noticed a trend that things just don’t work for me?

Soccer/Football

So last night I went to the soccer game (or football depending on where you are from) As I said in a previous post, the ministry of immigrant “stuff” was giving out free tickets. So I went with my friend Nahum (and his friend Dan) to the game. It was a “friendly” game (meaning that it didn’t matter what the score was etc.) against Moscow. We sat hear the crazy fans. (who ARE CRAZY) and watched the game. It was an ok game. I learned that when your team is down what do you do? Well naturally you curse another team – even if they aren’t playing, you just sing the song about your rival team (calling them S.O.B.’s…) could you imagine that happening at a baseball or hockey game? Ok, fine, maybe a hockey game (if there was enough beer involved…) We lost 1-0. Thanks Moscow. I also wanted to add that it was INSANE getting in there. First, traffic was backed up to the stadium, then we had to sneak Nahums friend in (as he had a ticket for a different section) the staff didnt care, they just wanted to be out of the chaos of all the swarming people. It was a good night.
Elections:

Usual crap. Ever see the movie “Selah Shabati”? If so, know that I am going to vote like he did. If you havn’t see the movie, then you should. It’s a classic Israeli film about new immigrants. Yes, you can get English subtitles.

My Dinner:

Rachel requested to know what I have for dinner… Um…. mmm m.. Last night I had some pizza. (one slice) Night before that? Don’t even remember. Oh, Pancakes sure with Josh. Normally it’s chicken though : ) Happy Rachel?? :)

All the time in the World…

So I am writing this as I am getting a few tests done. Nothing serious, it just takes HOURS. Yes. I had some goopy stuff to drink (which naturally is making me feel gross) and in 2 hours they take my blood… again. So here I am sitting in the waiting room, on my computer (geek) not in ulpan (which sucks) so, here I am- feeling queasy, on my computer, wanted coffee and bored. It’s also FREEZING. It’s like sitting outside in Canada during December. Not kidding.

Well that’s the update of my life. Nothing too exciting. But I am sure something else catastrophic will happen – always does. Then it will temporarily work out. Then go to crap again.

Have a great day.

Nikki

As a post script: Gogie never went to class today so were missing notes. Boo. And drinking all this goo made me sick and I slept for 6 hours. Ugh. Not good. Not good.

Sunday, February 05, 2006

A little bit of everything

Ok. It’s time to do an update. However, it’s going to be quick, as I really don’t have that much time…. However, here it goes.
Vacation

Last week was pretty crazy. I spent a good part of it being on “vacation.” Meaning, I spent time with friends, slept late, once and awhile did something to engage my brain and that’s about it. I spent Shabbat with my family out in hasmoniam, so that was nice. It was raining buckets when I first got there. It was pretty crazy. Shabbat was really and relaxing. Played apples to apples (which is a great game… and if you ever see it on sale, feel free to mail me a copy…. : ) ) so that was nice. Last night was at a housewarming for another friend. Was nice being out with my friends for a bit. Left a bit early, but everyone was pretty much leaving at the same time.

Ivrit (Hebrew)

Today. I got my butt out of bed, and then missed the bus for my first real day in ulpan. I got there late (oops…) Gogie made a “tsk, tsk” at me (and everyone laughed… thanks Gogie.. I hate you.) Our class is pretty good. A mix of people from all over the world: Estonia, USA, England, Belgium, Israel, Texas (I know that is a state in the US, but if you’ve ever been there, you know that it is it’s own country… grrr Texas…) The Hebrew teacher is pretty good (have no idea what her name is, I missed that in the first few moments…) So I know that it’s going to be tough, but hey, I got to learn it. Everyday 8:00 am until 12:30 baby. Bring it on.

Safta’s request.

Safta, my grandmother, requested that I speak more about my pets. So here it goes. I hav
Two cats. One, is mine (Moe) and the other, Shanti, is my foster kitty for the time being. They are great cat, although slightly insane. Here are there latest tricks. They discovered the storage area ontop of the shower. So they hide there, then jump out and scare the *(&(*&*^ out of me. Also, Shanty has learned how to open the freezer. Last thing I need is him getting stuck in there, so it’s been taped. They are a laugh those two. Moe, who came from the street, is a snob (he will only eat proper cat food, he likes his litter to be cleaned in a certain manner, or else he will sit on my shelf and knock my star wars collection off just to piss me off…. Yup,s a he’s a snob. Shanty, who came from a house, he is such a street cat. He likes the garbage and being insane. They are good cats though. Just not at 3 am when they think its playtime. Just because I woke up to get a drink of water does NOT mean that it’s time to play.

Other brain matter:

Um… Yeah. I’m part of a group called the Monday night movie club, only catch is, we never meet on a Monday night, it’s a rule. However, tomorrow night we might meet. Hehhe. Truth is, it’s just me and a few friends that get together watch a movie, make dinner and just laugh. It’s a good time. Think I am going to a football/soccer match this week, the government is giving free tickets to us immigrants – count me in! So I go pick up my “free” tickets tomorrow. While I am there, I will also get some paper work done.

End of the week!! Woohoo!

Nothing really exciting. So, due to my procrastionation, I never made it to the
Tax office today. Guess I’m going to have to do that next week. Stupid me.
I have a couple people looking at the apartment today, so that’s a good thing. Hmm…not much else. My Safta and my uncle are avid readers, so I wanted to make sure they had something to read. Also, want to say hello to Meital Brody. She’s been reading my blog since Sukkot and I promised her Ima I’d say hi. (Meital was born in October…)

Its Thursday. Not too sure what my Shabbat plans are.

More next week. Hopefully I will have a roomie by then.
Ok fine. This was a lousy post. Sorry.
:)
Shabbat shalom!

Brain Matter - Does it matter?

The First of the Brain matter:

As I am finding out that more and more people are reading my blog (yet not leaving a post… just casually mentioning that they “saw it on my blog…” I’ve made a decision to try and update it more often… so here it goes.

First of, my computer (or compooper as I like to call it…) it’s very strange. The keys are VERY sensitive all of a sudden- its very annoying. And the mouse keeps going allover the place, so I will be typing and next thing I know the curser has moved and I am now typing somewhere else on the page. If you know what’s wrong please let me know. It’s driving me semi-mad. (JUST semi…)

My current “vacation”

So, I am on ‘vacation” right now. Meaning, I am not in ulpan (that starts Sunday) I am not working yet (see the work section to follow) and I’m not really at the yeshiva anymore. So the past few nights I have stayed out in Modi’in. We’ve watched movies, ordered burgers and just been having a nice time. Love the fact that vacation for me is modi’in. Tomorrow morning I am going to brave the bureaucracy of Israel and try and deal with my city taxes on my apartment. Odd that as a renter I have to pay it, but that’s the way thing are here. Fortunately, I get a discount because I’m an Olah Chadisha (new immigrant. ha ha I’m an immigrant!) So now I have to deal with 9 months past, plus the upcoming year. Hopefully my landlords will let me renew my lease so I wont have to go mid April and change all the info as that will just be a pain in the a… So Yeah. Vacation. It’s all good.

Roommate:

Still searching.
Work:

So I have a job. I am now employed as a customer service representative on the phone (NO, not THAT kind of phone person…) OK, so I will be working from 245-11 pm, so that’s not too bad. Truth is, it’s a job that works with my ulpan schedule. That’s what is important to me – need to learn the language in order to be apart of the society. So YAY me. I don’t start until Feb 12th though.

Election:

I’m still undecided. I might vote “dumb” instead of Dumber and Stalin. Ahhhh. There is always the choice of “petek lavan” which means you put a white slip in, meaning you care enough to show up to vote, but you just hate the options. I’ve got another month and a half. We’ll see how things change.

Ok. That’s enough. First off, My Safta (grandmother) reads my blog, so Hi Safta! Hello to everyone else that is reading this… I know you are out there, so leave me a message telling me so ϑ

Have a great day!
